Reclaiming Rights: Supreme Court’s Roadmap for Dignity and Justice for Sex Workers
On June 4th, 2024, Ramaiah College of Law's Centre for Women and Child Welfare Policy hosted a special talk titled “Reclaiming Rights: Supreme Court's Roadmap for Dignity and Justice for Sex Workers” at the ESB Hall. The session, led by Mr. Rajesh Srinivas, Executive Director of Sangama NGO, aimed to advocate for the protection and enhancement of sex workers' rights by informing attendees about the Supreme Court's directives for ensuring dignity, justice, and equitable treatment.
The event commenced with a welcome by Ms. Akshatha Rao and Ms. Monisha Rajashekar, who introduced Mr. Srinivas. He discussed the socio-economic conditions of sex workers, noting that many remain in the profession due to its flexibility and financial benefits. Mr. Srinivas highlighted significant issues faced by sex workers, including barriers to healthcare, high rates of violence, and mental health challenges. He also provided an overview of the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act (ITPA) and emphasized the Supreme Court’s directives aimed at safeguarding sex workers' rights and dignity.
The talk concluded with a QCA session where Mr. Srinivas addressed attendees' questions, further emphasizing the importance of legal protections and support. Ms. Sweta Kumari, Faculty Coordinator, concluded the event with a vote of thanks.
The event successfully met its objectives by raising awareness about the socio- economic challenges and legal rights of sex workers, advocating for policy changes, and promoting a more inclusive legal framework. Attendees left with a deeper understanding of the issues and the Supreme Court's roadmap for ensuring dignity and justice for sex workers.
